What is the science/genetics/biotech capital of the world?

November 26th, 2009

Isn’t it Tokyo Japan or someplace in Asia. What are some other places that are leaders in genetic research? besides places in America?

It is hard to determine the answer because there are different ways to measure this (highest ranked publications in an area; number of patents issued; number of people working in that area).

Although you said not the US, I would point out that the area around Boston MA and around SanDiego CA are probably home to the largest number of "biotech companies" in the world.

Most other industrialized countries in the world have targeted biotechnology as a key area for investment and growth. So there are many biotech clusters in UK, Europe, Japan and Canada.

Other areas with rapid growth in biotechnology inlcude Singapore, India and China.
