Dog Glaucoma? Interested in any experiences please?

I am wanting to hear about the experiences you’ve had with canine glaucoma please. Especially if you have taken your dog to a specialist.
My 12 yr old rotti/chow mix was refered to a specialist yesterday and I’m just wanting to know what to expect.
I’ve heard that it can be very expensive. The vet he saw yesterday said that just the office visit alone is around 75.00

If your dog has had surgery by an ophthalmologists I would be very interested in what the out come was and approx what it has cost you.

I have had two dogs with Glaucoma. Unfortunately, I can’t give you the financial details without some research and materials that I don’t have handy at the moment!

The first was a dog that started at about 10 years old. We ended up removing the affected eye on the advice of a specialist. We treated the other eye with a series of drops (2 different types, daily). Unfortunately, at about 12 years old the other eye went "nuclear" and the dog ended up completely blind.

The second dog developed glaucoma in one eye at about 7-8 years old. This time we were able to catch it early and get her to a specialist, who injected the "dead" eye with a material that more or less hardened it — she still has the eye, but is blind in it. We treat the remaining eye with drops (again, 2 kinds, given religiously). So far so good. She is now 11 years old.

Taking your dog to a veterinary specialist is never going to be cheap. I’m sure we’ve paid over $3000 between the two dogs. The surgery to remove is not cheap — preserving the eye in the second dog was less expensive.

I’ve also never seen an affected eye "saved" — the dog will lose sight in that eye. It’s just a matter of getting to it before the eye swells to the point that it needs to be removed.

Do the eye drops for glaucoma stop you going blind or jsut slow you down?

If not then is there anything that can stop glaucoma blinding you.

glaucoma is progressive death of the nerve fiber layer of the retina , which is like cutting small wires in a thick bundle of a trunk of them. this means that with time you lose vision , the exact cause is not known yet , but the only association that we can manage is the elevated intraocular pressure , we decrease it as much as we can , to the point that the death of nerve fibers is minimal , and then we follow up , many people don’t lose any more vision , but some keeps on losing vision .

Has anyone every had problems with a cataract surgery?

I recently had cataract surgery and the doctor didn’t get all the cataract out. Is there anyone that has had this happen? What did the doctor do and what was the outcome?

Visit another eye doctor immediatly, and ask him i am not so sure but this isn’t suppose to happen, if he missed his operation then you should sue him.

Eyesight/Vision Question?

i had an exam today at school and i got bored after finishing so i put my head down to sleep. My arm as bent so that my right eye was on my forearm and my left was on the upper arm with my nose in the middle so like ther arm ws in a < position and there was some pressure on my eyes. anyway i looked up quickly once and when i shut my eyes again on my arm it wa like i could see a freeze frame image thing of what i had last seen. at first it was quick but i kept on doing it (looking up then down) and the image of what i had seen would stay for about for seconds. It was like my eyes had taken a picture and i could look at it like inside my brain. the ‘image’ itself was actually pretty clear. white parts were white bu anything else was shades of a bluey purple. Its all hard to explain but i was freaked out about it. i could like look at things that had append seconds before and i could look around in the image if you knwo what i mean.

my question is why was thre this imprint left when i shut my eyes? some pressure was applied.

i also tried this a while ago but iit didnt work. why?

You were seeing an after image, perfectly normal. Just like the circles you see after your picture is taken. It happens when you look at a bright image. By keeping your eyes closed, your eyes adapted to the dark.

To elicit again, try looking at a bright window then looking at a blank wall.

How to remove contact lenses.

Me pulling off my old contact lenses (Acuvue Oasys). I decided later to replace them by Purevision, and that was a great decision.
I see alot better in PureVision, and they are more comfortable at the end of the day, than the old ones.
I also tried Air Optix and it was a terrible experience (my Eye got screwed up), but it could be because of my alergy.
I obtained Biofinity once. They were great, but when i slept for 30min and i woke up, they were sticked to my eye and i couldn’t pull them off.

So i just wear PureVision now.

Can Macular Degeneration Lead To Blindness?

My mother is ranting on about my cousin who has Macular Degeneration and thinks that he’ll get blind any second (or at least in the future). And I’d like to know if it could lead to blindness or my mom is just panicking and going crazy.

Many older people develop Macular Degeneration as they get older. There are actually 2 types of macular degeration. They are often referred to as either wet or dry. Depending on the type of macular degeneration, will determine on how high the risk is for blindness. I would talk to a local optometrist or ophthalmologist for further information.
